March 31 2017 Goal Update
Checking in on my goals here at the end of the 1st quarter of 2017!

Goal Update March 31, 2017

Starting in 2017, I began publicly sharing goals related to building my Amazon FBA business as well as growing The Bootstrap Boutique. I set quarterly goals and do a check in on YouTube every two weeks to keep you updated on my progress and to hold myself accountable to working consistently towards meeting these goals.

For the first quarter of 2017, I set the following goals for myself:

  1. Sell all 500 units of my Private Label Product
  2. Launch a second Private Label Product
  3. Gain 5,000 Twitter Followers
  4. Send out 1,000 Tweets
  5. Earn 200 YouTube Subscribers
  6. Post 20 YouTube Videos
  7. Review 3 books on YouTube
  8. Appear on 3 Podcasts or YouTube Channels

So how did I do?  Let’s check in!

Sell all 250 units of my Private Label Product (Goal Not Met)

I ended the quarter selling 97 of the 250 units that I ordered.  If I had actually started in January, and not mid February, then I think this is a goal I could have achieved.

Launch a second Private Label Product (Goal Not Met)

I still have not launched a second private label product but hope to do so soon.

Gain 5,000 Twitter Followers (Goal Met)

I ended the quarter with 5,541 Twitter followers.

Send out 1,000 Tweets (Goal Met)

I sent 1,466 tweets during the quarter and plan to keep my engagement high.

Earn 200 YouTube Subscribers (Goal Met)

I am thrilled to end the quarter with 416 YouTube subscribers!

Post 20 YouTube Videos (Goal Met)

I posted 47 videos during the first quarter, far exceeding this goal.

Review 3 books on YouTube (Goal Met)

I reviewed Eat That Frog, Vlog like a Boss, and I did one sentence reviews of five classic business books.

Appear on 3 Podcasts or YouTube Channels (Goal Met)

During the quarter I was fortunate to appear of 2 podcasts and 1 YouTube channel.  You can find me on Moving Forward with John Lim, The Amazing Seller with Scott Voelker and on the Sellzee youtube channel.

In this video, I also share my goals for Q2:

For the second quarter of 2017, I set the following goals for myself:

1) Launch a second YouTube Channel for my Private Label brand and schedule 2 months of videos (8 total)

2) Get my Private Label Brand brand registered at Amazon

3) Work on The Bootstrap Boutique Blog

4) Watch and comment on 20 Amazon Seller Videos per week

And finally, this isn’t a stated goal, but I plan to use my “theme days” to get it all done.

Theme days are:

Monday – Product Work

Tuesday – Private Label Brand

Wednesday: YouTube

Thursday: The Bootstrap Boutique Brand

Friday: Plan & Review

Should I Stick With My Product?

In today’s video, I’m laying out all my numbers.  This is a breakdown of the cost of selling on Amazon on a per unit basis for my first order.  There are a couple of places where I can save money, so I also outline my estimated costs for a subsequent order.  Watch the video and let me know (via the poll in the video) what you think I should do!

1
00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:07,950
hey everybody welcome to the bootstrap

2
00:00:06,750 –> 00:00:13,139
boutique where beginners build

3
00:00:07,950 –> 00:00:14,940
businesses and stuff so I was supposed

4
00:00:13,139 –> 00:00:17,279
to talk about some other stuff today in

5
00:00:14,940 –> 00:00:19,560
today’s video and probably was going to

6
00:00:17,279 –> 00:00:22,830
be a lot more happy and upbeat but I’m

7
00:00:19,560 –> 00:00:25,800
just really struggling right now on this

8
00:00:22,830 –> 00:00:28,949
product that i’m selling amazon and do I

9
00:00:25,800 –> 00:00:32,820
reorder and sell more and push through

10
00:00:28,949 –> 00:00:35,579
or do I just drop it and go to another

11
00:00:32,820 –> 00:00:37,110
product which I do have picked out and

12
00:00:35,579 –> 00:00:38,790
it’s just sitting on the sidelines right

13
00:00:37,110 –> 00:00:40,829
now and I really I don’t want to get

14
00:00:38,790 –> 00:00:43,320
distracted by like what’s the new shiny

15
00:00:40,829 –> 00:00:45,000
thing right I don’t want that to be

16
00:00:43,320 –> 00:00:46,680
what’s driving my decision making so I’m

17
00:00:45,000 –> 00:00:50,550
really trying to put that out of my head

18
00:00:46,680 –> 00:00:53,010
and just focus on is this product worth

19
00:00:50,550 –> 00:00:55,170
moving forward with or not and what I

20
00:00:53,010 –> 00:00:56,789
thought I’d do is just film a video kind

21
00:00:55,170 –> 00:00:59,250
of talking it out talking about my

22
00:00:56,789 –> 00:01:01,079
thoughts with it and I’d love your

23
00:00:59,250 –> 00:01:02,699
feedback I’m gonna give you all my

24
00:01:01,079 –> 00:01:04,500
numbers I’m going to tell you what I

25
00:01:02,699 –> 00:01:07,680
think I’m going to talk about the sales

26
00:01:04,500 –> 00:01:11,070
that I have had lately and let’s see

27
00:01:07,680 –> 00:01:15,450
what we can figure out so here’s where I

28
00:01:11,070 –> 00:01:19,380
am right now i have i ordered 250 units

29
00:01:15,450 –> 00:01:23,610
of this product and i have sold more in

30
00:01:19,380 –> 00:01:25,350
the 80s so I’ve got still 150 + left to

31
00:01:23,610 –> 00:01:27,180
sell so I don’t have to if I’m going to

32
00:01:25,350 –> 00:01:29,579
reorder in order to not go out of stock

33
00:01:27,180 –> 00:01:32,460
I don’t have to do it like right now

34
00:01:29,579 –> 00:01:34,170
it’s not immediate but I need to be

35
00:01:32,460 –> 00:01:36,270
getting ready and getting the money

36
00:01:34,170 –> 00:01:38,850
ready and all that good stuff and really

37
00:01:36,270 –> 00:01:41,040
you know tightening down a time line

38
00:01:38,850 –> 00:01:44,490
with my supplier figuring it all out so

39
00:01:41,040 –> 00:01:45,990
we are not there yet I don’t have to

40
00:01:44,490 –> 00:01:48,810
make a decision today but it’s getting

41
00:01:45,990 –> 00:01:51,840
close the alternative is of course that

42
00:01:48,810 –> 00:01:55,380
I just go out of stock and don’t sell

43
00:01:51,840 –> 00:01:57,149
anything for a while and that can happen

44
00:01:55,380 –> 00:01:58,979
that won’t be the worst thing in the

45
00:01:57,149 –> 00:02:00,509
world but like I said I’m just trying to

46
00:01:58,979 –> 00:02:02,909
figure it out and I was hoping you guys

47
00:02:00,509 –> 00:02:05,670
would go along on the journey with me so

48
00:02:02,909 –> 00:02:07,500
let’s go through my numbers here’s my

49
00:02:05,670 –> 00:02:10,739
current pricing structure on amazon

50
00:02:07,500 –> 00:02:12,340
right now my cost of goods for six

51
00:02:10,739 –> 00:02:15,550
dollars a unit

52
00:02:12,340 –> 00:02:18,040
shipping cost me six dollars and ninety

53
00:02:15,550 –> 00:02:20,530
two sent a unit I know and that again is

54
00:02:18,040 –> 00:02:22,390
fedex Air Express so that’s like the

55
00:02:20,530 –> 00:02:24,550
fastest method it’s coming by air it is

56
00:02:22,390 –> 00:02:27,129
very expensive to ship that way but so

57
00:02:24,550 –> 00:02:29,349
the total price of that six dollars and

58
00:02:27,129 –> 00:02:31,750
ninety two cent was seventeen hundred

59
00:02:29,349 –> 00:02:34,690
thirty dollars was my entire what I paid

60
00:02:31,750 –> 00:02:37,690
for shipping on that first order i also

61
00:02:34,690 –> 00:02:39,610
am paying i’m averaging about 85 sent a

62
00:02:37,690 –> 00:02:41,379
unit to ship those products into the

63
00:02:39,610 –> 00:02:43,269
Amazon warehouse so as you know they

64
00:02:41,379 –> 00:02:45,849
were delivered to my house and i’m

65
00:02:43,269 –> 00:02:48,010
shipping about 50 at a time to amazon

66
00:02:45,849 –> 00:02:49,780
just to keep a minimal amount stock so

67
00:02:48,010 –> 00:02:51,280
if they didn’t sell i didn’t have to pay

68
00:02:49,780 –> 00:02:53,769
a long term storage fee or something

69
00:02:51,280 –> 00:02:56,530
like that but it’s cost me on average

70
00:02:53,769 –> 00:02:58,840
about 85 sent a unit and then also i’m

71
00:02:56,530 –> 00:03:01,239
paying 20 sent a unit to have my f in

72
00:02:58,840 –> 00:03:04,599
sku which is amazon’s identifier applied

73
00:03:01,239 –> 00:03:07,810
to the package so my cost landed to

74
00:03:04,599 –> 00:03:10,599
Amazon is thirteen dollars in 97 sent

75
00:03:07,810 –> 00:03:11,950
amazon has a lot of fees that they

76
00:03:10,599 –> 00:03:13,780
charge you to sell on that platform

77
00:03:11,950 –> 00:03:16,630
there’s a pick and pack or referral

78
00:03:13,780 –> 00:03:19,870
there’s others on shore but those feeds

79
00:03:16,630 –> 00:03:22,690
are nine dollars and seven cents so my

80
00:03:19,870 –> 00:03:24,880
cost just to sell this product every

81
00:03:22,690 –> 00:03:28,030
time I sell this prodigy amazon it cost

82
00:03:24,880 –> 00:03:32,019
me twenty three dollars and four cent

83
00:03:28,030 –> 00:03:36,849
i’m selling this product for twenty-four

84
00:03:32,019 –> 00:03:39,220
dollars and ninety-nine cent so my

85
00:03:36,849 –> 00:03:41,799
profit if nothing goes wrong is one

86
00:03:39,220 –> 00:03:45,010
dollar ninety two cent which is bad it’s

87
00:03:41,799 –> 00:03:46,239
really bad oh this is not what i thought

88
00:03:45,010 –> 00:03:48,310
was going to happen with my first

89
00:03:46,239 –> 00:03:49,989
product I really thought that I was

90
00:03:48,310 –> 00:03:53,290
going to be one of those success stories

91
00:03:49,989 –> 00:03:54,910
and I’m just not so here’s a couple of

92
00:03:53,290 –> 00:03:56,650
issues with that one of my shipping is

93
00:03:54,910 –> 00:03:59,200
super high but that was ship via air

94
00:03:56,650 –> 00:04:01,419
express and that’s the most expensive

95
00:03:59,200 –> 00:04:02,950
way to ship it literally so I knew I

96
00:04:01,419 –> 00:04:05,620
could get that to come down so I wasn’t

97
00:04:02,950 –> 00:04:08,260
really worried i just wanted to launch a

98
00:04:05,620 –> 00:04:11,079
product that units on my costs six

99
00:04:08,260 –> 00:04:14,650
dollars a unit so i ordered 3,000 pieces

100
00:04:11,079 –> 00:04:17,560
i sell a 12 pack of this product and so

101
00:04:14,650 –> 00:04:20,950
it’s 50 cent apiece so three thousand

102
00:04:17,560 –> 00:04:23,360
times or 3,000 you know whatever its 250

103
00:04:20,950 –> 00:04:25,580
units total

104
00:04:23,360 –> 00:04:27,439
I talked to my supplier and I ordered

105
00:04:25,580 –> 00:04:29,300
3,000 pieces and they said they can’t

106
00:04:27,439 –> 00:04:32,360
give me a price break until i order

107
00:04:29,300 –> 00:04:34,550
10,000 pieces which is over 800 units

108
00:04:32,360 –> 00:04:38,389
and then it was only going to be seven

109
00:04:34,550 –> 00:04:39,710
sent a piece not a lot of money saved

110
00:04:38,389 –> 00:04:42,259
there and I don’t have the capital

111
00:04:39,710 –> 00:04:44,689
anyway or not really willing to put up

112
00:04:42,259 –> 00:04:46,520
the capital to order 10,000 pieces at

113
00:04:44,689 –> 00:04:48,560
this point because if I was if I was

114
00:04:46,520 –> 00:04:50,270
like already sold out and I thought well

115
00:04:48,560 –> 00:04:51,650
I can probably make it up on volumes and

116
00:04:50,270 –> 00:04:52,789
yeah I might be willing to invest the

117
00:04:51,650 –> 00:04:57,050
money but that’s not what’s happening

118
00:04:52,789 –> 00:05:01,250
here so that’s not what I want to do the

119
00:04:57,050 –> 00:05:03,020
Amazon cost it went up a dollar so if

120
00:05:01,250 –> 00:05:04,460
you’re not selling on Amazon currently

121
00:05:03,020 –> 00:05:06,229
you may not know but in the end of

122
00:05:04,460 –> 00:05:08,750
februari they’ve raised all their prices

123
00:05:06,229 –> 00:05:11,449
for FBA so the cost of everything

124
00:05:08,750 –> 00:05:14,389
associated with FBA went up and my cost

125
00:05:11,449 –> 00:05:16,550
went up about a dollar and so and

126
00:05:14,389 –> 00:05:18,860
another thing I talked about in another

127
00:05:16,550 –> 00:05:21,110
video I thought I was ordering 500 units

128
00:05:18,860 –> 00:05:23,090
of my product and I thought my product

129
00:05:21,110 –> 00:05:25,370
cost was going to be three dollars a

130
00:05:23,090 –> 00:05:27,680
unit and when I went back and I did the

131
00:05:25,370 –> 00:05:29,029
math because I the sub boxes all came

132
00:05:27,680 –> 00:05:32,330
into my house and I living room and I

133
00:05:29,029 –> 00:05:34,940
was counting I was like 25 boxes that

134
00:05:32,330 –> 00:05:37,520
doesn’t sound right i should have 50 if

135
00:05:34,940 –> 00:05:40,009
there’s ten a box went back and looked

136
00:05:37,520 –> 00:05:43,039
at my purchase order and no i ordered

137
00:05:40,009 –> 00:05:47,569
250 years I’m just bad at math sometimes

138
00:05:43,039 –> 00:05:49,819
all the time um anyway so I thought that

139
00:05:47,569 –> 00:05:52,129
I was selling three dollars and it was

140
00:05:49,819 –> 00:05:54,020
six I thought that you know I should the

141
00:05:52,129 –> 00:05:56,870
most expensive way possible right so I

142
00:05:54,020 –> 00:05:59,629
was thinking okay well I have a lot of

143
00:05:56,870 –> 00:06:01,520
ways that I can save some costs on this

144
00:05:59,629 –> 00:06:05,150
product and here’s what I am projecting

145
00:06:01,520 –> 00:06:06,770
my next order to cost me so it’s still

146
00:06:05,150 –> 00:06:08,930
going to be six dollars a unit because

147
00:06:06,770 –> 00:06:11,930
I’m not ordering 10,000 pieces so my

148
00:06:08,930 –> 00:06:15,740
product cost is not going to change I

149
00:06:11,930 –> 00:06:17,479
got a quote from guided imports to do my

150
00:06:15,740 –> 00:06:19,490
freight forwarding for me and it would

151
00:06:17,479 –> 00:06:21,710
be four dollars and seventy two sent a

152
00:06:19,490 –> 00:06:24,080
unit so we’re going to save two dollars

153
00:06:21,710 –> 00:06:26,599
and fifty Cent two dollars and twenty

154
00:06:24,080 –> 00:06:30,529
cent to 20 told you those bad at math

155
00:06:26,599 –> 00:06:32,149
220 a unit on shipping this would be

156
00:06:30,529 –> 00:06:34,430
shipping straight to the Amazon

157
00:06:32,149 –> 00:06:36,470
warehouse not to my house so I would

158
00:06:34,430 –> 00:06:38,630
save that 85 sent a unit

159
00:06:36,470 –> 00:06:40,700
Bridge I would also get my designer to

160
00:06:38,630 –> 00:06:43,160
fix my product to have the FN sku

161
00:06:40,700 –> 00:06:44,600
actually on the label so Amazon’s not

162
00:06:43,160 –> 00:06:48,320
adding it separately so I would save

163
00:06:44,600 –> 00:06:51,320
that 20 sending unit so that would have

164
00:06:48,320 –> 00:06:53,600
me at a amazon landed cost of ten

165
00:06:51,320 –> 00:06:55,970
dollars and seventy two cents a unit

166
00:06:53,600 –> 00:06:59,090
which is already saving me you know

167
00:06:55,970 –> 00:07:01,460
three dollars or so three dollars

168
00:06:59,090 –> 00:07:04,460
20-cent assuming the Amazon call stays

169
00:07:01,460 –> 00:07:06,890
the same at 907 I would be landed are

170
00:07:04,460 –> 00:07:09,740
all in Kosta amazon nineteen dollars and

171
00:07:06,890 –> 00:07:12,620
seventy nine cent if I still sold at

172
00:07:09,740 –> 00:07:14,780
2499 that I would have five dollars and

173
00:07:12,620 –> 00:07:18,230
twenty cent profit again assuming

174
00:07:14,780 –> 00:07:20,090
nothing goes wrong prior to PPC all that

175
00:07:18,230 –> 00:07:25,970
fun stuff here’s what I’m trying to

176
00:07:20,090 –> 00:07:28,730
figure out is it worth it that’s still

177
00:07:25,970 –> 00:07:31,280
not a lot of money to be made off of

178
00:07:28,730 –> 00:07:33,110
these products five dot twenty cent is

179
00:07:31,280 –> 00:07:35,210
you know if you go by the Scott Volcker

180
00:07:33,110 –> 00:07:37,910
Rule and you don’t have to but if you do

181
00:07:35,210 –> 00:07:41,450
five dollars and twenty cent falls well

182
00:07:37,910 –> 00:07:43,940
short of the 10 x 10 x one rule sticking

183
00:07:41,450 –> 00:07:45,590
with the Scott Volk ler Tim buys him by

184
00:07:43,940 –> 00:07:47,480
one rule which list maybe I should just

185
00:07:45,590 –> 00:07:49,880
recap that that means you’re selling one

186
00:07:47,480 –> 00:07:54,080
product 10 cells a day an average of ten

187
00:07:49,880 –> 00:07:57,979
dollars profit so if that’s what I was

188
00:07:54,080 –> 00:08:00,919
selling and we’re following those rules

189
00:07:57,979 –> 00:08:04,280
and them were just not there right the

190
00:08:00,919 –> 00:08:08,540
flip side of that is that the sales are

191
00:08:04,280 –> 00:08:11,330
not supporting even these teeny tiny

192
00:08:08,540 –> 00:08:14,000
little profits I don’t know what’s going

193
00:08:11,330 –> 00:08:17,210
on my pay per click but I do know that

194
00:08:14,000 –> 00:08:19,280
when I look at the ad spend every few

195
00:08:17,210 –> 00:08:23,030
days like nothing is changing and I

196
00:08:19,280 –> 00:08:25,910
don’t have a lot of impressions I was on

197
00:08:23,030 –> 00:08:29,540
a PPC training that Scott Vogler and

198
00:08:25,910 –> 00:08:31,280
Chris Shaffer and Dom sugar dead and I

199
00:08:29,540 –> 00:08:32,930
got to ask a question which was cool and

200
00:08:31,280 –> 00:08:34,669
I said you know look guys I watched a

201
00:08:32,930 –> 00:08:37,070
products five weeks ago I’ve gotten

202
00:08:34,669 –> 00:08:40,250
about 32,000 impression since then that

203
00:08:37,070 –> 00:08:42,710
seems low and they agree with me they

204
00:08:40,250 –> 00:08:44,240
said yeah that seems kind of low you

205
00:08:42,710 –> 00:08:46,209
know we want to see about a thousand a

206
00:08:44,240 –> 00:08:48,610
day so I’m well below that

207
00:08:46,209 –> 00:08:51,009
and I don’t I just don’t understand

208
00:08:48,610 –> 00:08:53,139
what’s what’s going on with that so I’ve

209
00:08:51,009 –> 00:08:56,139
got some ideas of ways that I can do

210
00:08:53,139 –> 00:08:57,550
work to mark it off of amazon I think

211
00:08:56,139 –> 00:08:59,800
can drive some traffic there if that I

212
00:08:57,550 –> 00:09:01,899
know I need to implement its just when

213
00:08:59,800 –> 00:09:03,639
do you feel try to find the time to do

214
00:09:01,899 –> 00:09:06,699
that it’s something I can’t do myself I

215
00:09:03,639 –> 00:09:09,699
need a second set of hands and that’s

216
00:09:06,699 –> 00:09:11,800
complicating issues but enough with the

217
00:09:09,699 –> 00:09:12,999
excuses Megan this is this is really

218
00:09:11,800 –> 00:09:15,100
what’s going on though this is how I

219
00:09:12,999 –> 00:09:17,050
just talk through the things I’m

220
00:09:15,100 –> 00:09:20,199
thinking about so I just wanted to do it

221
00:09:17,050 –> 00:09:22,119
kind of live with you guys and and get

222
00:09:20,199 –> 00:09:25,029
your thoughts on so as of this recording

223
00:09:22,119 –> 00:09:27,490
i have sold 86 units and like I said

224
00:09:25,029 –> 00:09:29,980
about five weeks and I just it’s just

225
00:09:27,490 –> 00:09:32,050
not enough you know I mean I have when I

226
00:09:29,980 –> 00:09:35,259
first launched my product i was selling

227
00:09:32,050 –> 00:09:37,449
like five six a day one day so 11 and I

228
00:09:35,259 –> 00:09:40,540
was like oh my gosh this is awesome but

229
00:09:37,449 –> 00:09:43,990
since then it just has not been that

230
00:09:40,540 –> 00:09:45,550
great and and so I don’t know what to do

231
00:09:43,990 –> 00:09:47,259
I don’t know did I Drive do I drive

232
00:09:45,550 –> 00:09:50,499
traffic from somewhere else do I just

233
00:09:47,259 –> 00:09:52,449
focus on PVC and throw my ad spend up to

234
00:09:50,499 –> 00:09:54,429
like five dollars click just try and get

235
00:09:52,449 –> 00:09:56,860
some stuff coming through do I just let

236
00:09:54,429 –> 00:10:00,490
it sell out at three units a day or two

237
00:09:56,860 –> 00:10:04,329
units a day until it’s on I don’t know

238
00:10:00,490 –> 00:10:06,040
guys so hey here’s just the insight into

239
00:10:04,329 –> 00:10:08,350
a mind if somebody’s that’s selling on

240
00:10:06,040 –> 00:10:10,600
Amazon what I am encouraged by is that I

241
00:10:08,350 –> 00:10:12,309
know I did a lot of things wrong this

242
00:10:10,600 –> 00:10:15,399
time that I won’t do next time like for

243
00:10:12,309 –> 00:10:18,759
instance I went into a category that was

244
00:10:15,399 –> 00:10:24,009
I believe too competitive now um I don’t

245
00:10:18,759 –> 00:10:25,480
know I don’t know why I did that don’t

246
00:10:24,009 –> 00:10:27,610
really remember back into

247
00:10:25,480 –> 00:10:29,379
september-october when I was sourcing

248
00:10:27,610 –> 00:10:30,639
this product why I was like yeah this is

249
00:10:29,379 –> 00:10:32,799
the one let’s see what i mean i love it

250
00:10:30,639 –> 00:10:34,540
i think it’s great i’ve had awesome

251
00:10:32,799 –> 00:10:36,220
feedback all my reviews have been five

252
00:10:34,540 –> 00:10:40,119
stars which knock on wood hope that

253
00:10:36,220 –> 00:10:41,889
continues but i do think it was probably

254
00:10:40,119 –> 00:10:44,799
too competitive it’s probably not

255
00:10:41,889 –> 00:10:47,110
differentiated enough so there’s just

256
00:10:44,799 –> 00:10:49,540
some stuff that I can do better that I

257
00:10:47,110 –> 00:10:52,269
need to do better and I’m excited on

258
00:10:49,540 –> 00:10:54,970
working on doing better the next time

259
00:10:52,269 –> 00:10:56,709
but if I can salvage this product if I

260
00:10:54,970 –> 00:11:00,080
can fix it I also think that would be

261
00:10:56,709 –> 00:11:03,020
pretty cool so we’ll see well

262
00:11:00,080 –> 00:11:04,790
what happens I am probably i’m going to

263
00:11:03,020 –> 00:11:07,040
try and throw up a little poll up here

264
00:11:04,790 –> 00:11:09,890
on the corner it might be over here i’m

265
00:11:07,040 –> 00:11:12,410
always bad at which way the cards come

266
00:11:09,890 –> 00:11:14,540
up but I can do pole so tell me do you

267
00:11:12,410 –> 00:11:17,840
think I continue with this product or

268
00:11:14,540 –> 00:11:20,000
should I move on this is not a democracy

269
00:11:17,840 –> 00:11:21,620
I’m still couldn’t make the decision on

270
00:11:20,000 –> 00:11:23,750
my own but i’m really curious with you

271
00:11:21,620 –> 00:11:25,340
guys having the numbers what you think I

272
00:11:23,750 –> 00:11:27,590
should do so I will look forward to your

273
00:11:25,340 –> 00:11:29,900
responses and I will talk to you next

274
00:11:27,590 –> 00:11:31,820
week take care what i thought was going

275
00:11:29,900 –> 00:11:33,890
to happen with my first product I really

276
00:11:31,820 –> 00:11:35,600
thought that I was going to be one of

277
00:11:33,890 –> 00:11:40,030
those success stories and I’m just not

278
00:11:35,600 –> 00:11:40,030
so here’s a couple of issue

Schedule Your Success

Transcript:

Running and Amazon FBA business, or any kind of business for that matter, takes a ton of time, so here’s how to make sure you have enough of it. Hey everybody welcome back to another episode of The Bootstrap Boutique where beginners build businesses, I am so glad you’re here because today we’re going to talk about how to schedule your success.

Running A Business

So like I already said, running a business of any kind takes so much time. So much more time than you think its going to take, am I right? And it is really easy to get bogged down in those details.

But what I have found is that if you want to be successful in running a business, you’ve got to schedule it.

You’ve got to make time for it.

Here’s how we’re going to do that.

Schedule Your Success

I want you to make a list of your priorities for the year. Once you’ve got that, get out your calendar. You’re going to have to make some notes.

So what do you want to accomplish this year, because if you don’t plan for it, it’s not going to happen.

When in this year are you going to launch your next product? Go ahead and think about that launch date, get out your calendar and write it down, because that’s going to allow you to work backwards, to reverse engineer, when you need to be working on those certain tasks to get to that launch date on time.

If you’re going to launch a new product this year, you already know what steps you have to do. You have to research your market, find a supplier, get samples, customize & order, make your final order, get product photos taken, get it listed and launch it.

There’s eight steps.

So if you’re going to launch at the end of the year, you can go ahead now and say I’ve got to have market research done by X date, I’ve got to have these samples in my house by X date, I’ve got to product photos done by this date. And that way you can make sure that by the time you hit December you are ready to go with that new product.

You can fit all that other life stuff in around that but make sure if launching a product is your priority (and your priority can be whatever, this is just an example), that you have time to do the things that you need to do to make that priority happen.

Calendar White Space

So here’s my other suggestion for that, you should leave lots of white space in your calendar.

Sometimes that freaks people out, they’ve got to have every minute scheduled.

But no, not you.

You’re going to be smarter than that this year.

White space on your calendar allows life to happen. Some things are going to take more time than you think, sometimes life is going to happen and you’re going to have to do something you were not expecting to do.

Give yourself space to be flexible, give yourself room to respond to opportunities that come your way and you will still be able to do all the stuff you want to do , and hit that number one priority, whatever it is, in your time frame.

Easy enough, right? But the devil is in the details you still have got to get to work.

I live by my calendar, I say my calendar is my boss, because it keeps me on track and it keeps me moving forward and that’s what I want for you this year.

Wrap Up

Leave me a comment down below and let me know what is your number one priority this year? What is it you’re going to achieve and have you blocked off the time  to make sure that you can actually do the work to make it happen. I look forward to reading your responses and I will talk to you next time. Take care!

Goal Update – March 24, 2017 (Amazon FBA, Twitter, YouTube, Podcasts)

Goal Update March 24, 2017
Goal Update March 24, 2017

You can catch up on all my goal updates here.

  1. Sell all 250 units of my Private Label Product
  2. Launch a second Private Label Product
  3. Gain 5,000 Twitter Followers
  4. Send out 1,000 Tweets
  5. Earn 200 YouTube Subscribers
  6. Post 20 YouTube Videos
  7. Review 3 books on YouTube
  8. Appear on 3 Podcasts or YouTube Channels

So how did I do?  Let’s check in!

Sell all 250 units of my Private Label Product

I’ve sold 79 units so far. I’ve had a few issues including running out of stock and having a hijacker sit on my listing.

Launch a second Private Label Product

This won’t happen during this quarter. I know what I want my product to be, but I need to decide if I want to re-order product 1 first or move to product 2.  I don’t have enough capital to do both.

Gain 5,000 Twitter Followers

I’m currently at 5,497 Twitter followers and continue to enjoy the platform.

Send out 1,000 Tweets

I’ve hit this goal also, I’m currently at 1,047 tweets.

Earn 200 YouTube Subscribers

This goal seems silly now as I’ve doubled this number.

Post 20 YouTube Videos

I’ve currently published 27 new videos/

Review 3 books on YouTube

I’ve reviewed the following:
-Eat That Frog by Brian Tracey

-Vlog Like A Boss by Amy Schmittauer

-5 One Sentence Book Reviews

Appear on 3 Podcasts or YouTube Channels

I’ve bee fortunate to appear on 2 podcasts and 1 YouTube channel!

Moving Forward with John Lim

-The Amazing Seller with Scott Voelker

-SellZee Scanning trip at Sellzee

It’s been a great couple of weeks and I can’t wait to share what I’ve got coming up next. Stay tuned!

00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:07,259
just feeling super casual today hey

2
00:00:05,490 –> 00:00:09,150
welcome to another episode of the

3
00:00:07,259 –> 00:00:11,010
bootstrap boutique where beginners built

4
00:00:09,150 –> 00:00:12,509
businesses I allows you’re here today

5
00:00:11,010 –> 00:00:14,580
because we’re just going to do an update

6
00:00:12,509 –> 00:00:16,500
video there’s a lot of things that I

7
00:00:14,580 –> 00:00:18,900
wanted to talk about that don’t really

8
00:00:16,500 –> 00:00:20,670
ruin their own video but because I’m

9
00:00:18,900 –> 00:00:22,260
like all about full disclosure and once

10
00:00:20,670 –> 00:00:24,750
you guys to know what’s going on and

11
00:00:22,260 –> 00:00:27,180
where I am so it can help you know what

12
00:00:24,750 –> 00:00:28,380
to do to take your next step I just

13
00:00:27,180 –> 00:00:30,720
thought let’s just put it all together

14
00:00:28,380 –> 00:00:32,340
in one will call this our March update

15
00:00:30,720 –> 00:00:34,050
haven’t done a video like this since

16
00:00:32,340 –> 00:00:36,480
back in January and at that time I

17
00:00:34,050 –> 00:00:38,760
wasn’t even selling products on Amazon

18
00:00:36,480 –> 00:00:41,790
my product had not even shipped to the

19
00:00:38,760 –> 00:00:43,920
states yet and it’s quite different now

20
00:00:41,790 –> 00:00:45,989
I have a product selling on Amazon it’s

21
00:00:43,920 –> 00:00:47,579
pretty exciting stuff and that’s one

22
00:00:45,989 –> 00:00:50,010
thing I wanted to talk about our sales

23
00:00:47,579 –> 00:00:51,570
I’m happy that pretty much every day I’m

24
00:00:50,010 –> 00:00:53,820
able to what I call get on the board

25
00:00:51,570 –> 00:00:55,680
make a cell or two but I’m finding that

26
00:00:53,820 –> 00:00:58,920
that’s kind of worm leveling off them

27
00:00:55,680 –> 00:01:00,570
not sure why so I when I first started

28
00:00:58,920 –> 00:01:02,699
when this product for his lunch i was

29
00:01:00,570 –> 00:01:05,129
having days with a lot more sales

30
00:01:02,699 –> 00:01:07,890
activity happening i would had a couple

31
00:01:05,129 –> 00:01:10,080
of days six sales i have one of 11 four

32
00:01:07,890 –> 00:01:13,080
or five was pretty much where I was and

33
00:01:10,080 –> 00:01:14,400
I just haven’t hit that again since i

34
00:01:13,080 –> 00:01:15,720
went out of stock that time and i

35
00:01:14,400 –> 00:01:17,490
traveled out of state while i was gone

36
00:01:15,720 –> 00:01:19,140
my products sold out and all that stuff

37
00:01:17,490 –> 00:01:20,970
so i just had not be able to get back to

38
00:01:19,140 –> 00:01:23,189
that level even though i now have

39
00:01:20,970 –> 00:01:24,840
reviews on my powers I have five star

40
00:01:23,189 –> 00:01:26,520
reviews so my customers have been very

41
00:01:24,840 –> 00:01:29,280
happy with what I’m selling which makes

42
00:01:26,520 –> 00:01:31,439
me very happy but I’m still kind of

43
00:01:29,280 –> 00:01:34,079
stuck at that two to three sales a day

44
00:01:31,439 –> 00:01:36,150
range now I have been lucky in my

45
00:01:34,079 –> 00:01:38,130
reviews my customers have told me what

46
00:01:36,150 –> 00:01:39,720
they’re using this product for because

47
00:01:38,130 –> 00:01:41,220
there’s a couple of different things

48
00:01:39,720 –> 00:01:42,780
that you could actually just call it for

49
00:01:41,220 –> 00:01:44,340
and the customers and their reviews are

50
00:01:42,780 –> 00:01:48,630
saying that I’m using it for this and I

51
00:01:44,340 –> 00:01:50,280
love it it’s so perfect whatever so I’m

52
00:01:48,630 –> 00:01:52,560
going to go back and do some work on my

53
00:01:50,280 –> 00:01:54,540
listing to kind of optimized around that

54
00:01:52,560 –> 00:01:56,670
area because I want to be able to pick

55
00:01:54,540 –> 00:01:58,740
up people that are doing that also make

56
00:01:56,670 –> 00:02:00,570
something yet this is the product i need

57
00:01:58,740 –> 00:02:02,430
if this is what i want to do another

58
00:02:00,570 –> 00:02:04,770
reason why sales have been lower is

59
00:02:02,430 –> 00:02:06,180
because i had my first hijacker yay now

60
00:02:04,770 –> 00:02:07,680
I talked about this a little bit of a

61
00:02:06,180 –> 00:02:09,119
periscope video and if you’re not

62
00:02:07,680 –> 00:02:10,140
following me on Twitter make sure you

63
00:02:09,119 –> 00:02:11,610
are because

64
00:02:10,140 –> 00:02:13,770
this is an ID I got from my buddy

65
00:02:11,610 –> 00:02:15,150
Stephen over at full-time FDA was to

66
00:02:13,770 –> 00:02:17,760
just go on periscope and be a little

67
00:02:15,150 –> 00:02:19,440
more visible there and I share some

68
00:02:17,760 –> 00:02:21,630
content and some information there i’m

69
00:02:19,440 –> 00:02:23,010
kind of using it almost like this you

70
00:02:21,630 –> 00:02:25,319
know if things don’t want an entire

71
00:02:23,010 –> 00:02:27,030
video by their updates that I want to

72
00:02:25,319 –> 00:02:28,800
share I’ve just been kind of uploaded in

73
00:02:27,030 –> 00:02:32,580
the periscope getting on doing a very

74
00:02:28,800 –> 00:02:34,410
raw unedited live cat but I don’t

75
00:02:32,580 –> 00:02:36,630
interrogate los lunas like guys I had my

76
00:02:34,410 –> 00:02:38,220
first hacker I can’t even believe this I

77
00:02:36,630 –> 00:02:40,319
didn’t know that I was sawing enough to

78
00:02:38,220 –> 00:02:43,110
warrant a hacker however here’s what was

79
00:02:40,319 –> 00:02:45,360
weird about this hijacker not hacker

80
00:02:43,110 –> 00:02:48,000
here’s what was weird about that though

81
00:02:45,360 –> 00:02:50,580
usually hijackers are selling your

82
00:02:48,000 –> 00:02:52,890
product for a higher cost because that’s

83
00:02:50,580 –> 00:02:56,130
where they’re making money however this

84
00:02:52,890 –> 00:02:59,400
hijacker was had my product listed for

85
00:02:56,130 –> 00:03:01,110
six dollars which is like a seventy-five

86
00:02:59,400 –> 00:03:02,880
percent discount offer what I’m selling

87
00:03:01,110 –> 00:03:05,040
and I was on periscope saying I don’t

88
00:03:02,880 –> 00:03:07,470
understand that how does anybody expect

89
00:03:05,040 –> 00:03:09,239
to ever make money off of it and what

90
00:03:07,470 –> 00:03:11,220
someone commented in the periscope feed

91
00:03:09,239 –> 00:03:13,320
was that this person probably has no

92
00:03:11,220 –> 00:03:14,579
intention of actually selling the

93
00:03:13,320 –> 00:03:15,959
product they’re just going to go out and

94
00:03:14,579 –> 00:03:17,670
get as many sales as they can before

95
00:03:15,959 –> 00:03:19,799
amazon shuts and downs now that’s

96
00:03:17,670 –> 00:03:21,959
pitiful that is pitiful that people do

97
00:03:19,799 –> 00:03:24,000
that but I guess we shouldn’t be so

98
00:03:21,959 –> 00:03:25,980
surprised without it unfortunately

99
00:03:24,000 –> 00:03:27,660
there’s another guy actually the

100
00:03:25,980 –> 00:03:29,190
contacting you via Twitter he’s like is

101
00:03:27,660 –> 00:03:33,000
this person your hijacker and I was like

102
00:03:29,190 –> 00:03:34,500
oh my gosh yes it is and I had sent them

103
00:03:33,000 –> 00:03:35,549
and not a seasoned justice whatever

104
00:03:34,500 –> 00:03:37,110
better like I hey you don’t have

105
00:03:35,549 –> 00:03:38,820
permission to resell this and i haven’t

106
00:03:37,110 –> 00:03:40,980
sold it to you so you need to take your

107
00:03:38,820 –> 00:03:42,750
listing down and the southern person

108
00:03:40,980 –> 00:03:44,700
actually contacted amazon and when i was

109
00:03:42,750 –> 00:03:47,430
telling my husband about the hijacker

110
00:03:44,700 –> 00:03:49,079
that night while you’re laying in bed I

111
00:03:47,430 –> 00:03:50,459
pulled it off the plate I’ll just show

112
00:03:49,079 –> 00:03:52,110
you what I’m talking about confuse like

113
00:03:50,459 –> 00:03:54,180
Heidecker what the heck are you talking

114
00:03:52,110 –> 00:03:56,640
about I’ll just show you so I pull up my

115
00:03:54,180 –> 00:03:58,829
phone they’re gone so I was very happy

116
00:03:56,640 –> 00:04:02,519
and the next day myself came back now

117
00:03:58,829 –> 00:04:03,780
what I don’t know is how many people got

118
00:04:02,519 –> 00:04:05,310
dudes in the thinking they could get

119
00:04:03,780 –> 00:04:07,859
this product for six dollars and they’re

120
00:04:05,310 –> 00:04:10,560
never going to actually get that product

121
00:04:07,859 –> 00:04:12,359
and what that’s going to mean for my

122
00:04:10,560 –> 00:04:15,090
listing for my I mean I didn’t sell it

123
00:04:12,359 –> 00:04:17,459
so hopefully it doesn’t affect me or my

124
00:04:15,090 –> 00:04:18,660
account but I just don’t know so if you

125
00:04:17,459 –> 00:04:20,630
know please leave it down in the

126
00:04:18,660 –> 00:04:22,430
comments and tell me another kind of

127
00:04:20,630 –> 00:04:27,860
anything that i noticed i was looking at

128
00:04:22,430 –> 00:04:29,780
my pay per click and they may i spent on

129
00:04:27,860 –> 00:04:32,870
paper quite over the past week has not

130
00:04:29,780 –> 00:04:35,030
changed which seems unusual seems weird

131
00:04:32,870 –> 00:04:36,710
and i take and both of my campaigns that

132
00:04:35,030 –> 00:04:38,390
have an automatic in the manual they’re

133
00:04:36,710 –> 00:04:40,490
both running so I’ve got to spend some

134
00:04:38,390 –> 00:04:42,200
time digging into that on pay per click

135
00:04:40,490 –> 00:04:44,300
and trying to figure out why my ads I

136
00:04:42,200 –> 00:04:46,580
mean show more click on more and

137
00:04:44,300 –> 00:04:48,380
converting into more sales so last thing

138
00:04:46,580 –> 00:04:49,850
I wanted to talk about and again this is

139
00:04:48,380 –> 00:04:51,500
something that I think it’s important to

140
00:04:49,850 –> 00:04:53,450
talk about to share with you but it

141
00:04:51,500 –> 00:04:56,270
doesn’t mean it some video is the

142
00:04:53,450 –> 00:04:58,130
importance of getting a correct value on

143
00:04:56,270 –> 00:05:00,380
your commercial invoice when your

144
00:04:58,130 –> 00:05:03,230
manufacture chips the product to you

145
00:05:00,380 –> 00:05:05,270
when my manufacture night were talking

146
00:05:03,230 –> 00:05:06,650
about prices we agreed that the cost of

147
00:05:05,270 –> 00:05:08,330
goods was going to be fifteen hundred

148
00:05:06,650 –> 00:05:10,070
dollars shipping was going to be

149
00:05:08,330 –> 00:05:12,680
seventeen hundred dollars and that’s off

150
00:05:10,070 –> 00:05:14,060
fedex express shipping via air and so

151
00:05:12,680 –> 00:05:16,070
we’re looking at a total of thirty two

152
00:05:14,060 –> 00:05:18,770
hundred dollars so the value of goods on

153
00:05:16,070 –> 00:05:20,420
that is only fifteen hundred dollars so

154
00:05:18,770 –> 00:05:22,130
as the gym that was being cleared

155
00:05:20,420 –> 00:05:25,400
through customs i got these phone calls

156
00:05:22,130 –> 00:05:26,960
from the fedex people that do the

157
00:05:25,400 –> 00:05:28,760
clearance for you and they’re saying due

158
00:05:26,960 –> 00:05:30,440
to the high cost that good we need some

159
00:05:28,760 –> 00:05:32,360
additional documentation and as what we

160
00:05:30,440 –> 00:05:34,940
need high cost of goods what’s up with

161
00:05:32,360 –> 00:05:36,320
some threshold for that they said well

162
00:05:34,940 –> 00:05:37,820
three thousand dollars and several

163
00:05:36,320 –> 00:05:39,260
perfect i’m at fifteen hundred dollars

164
00:05:37,820 –> 00:05:41,300
you don’t need all that information for

165
00:05:39,260 –> 00:05:43,400
me and usually no no we do because your

166
00:05:41,300 –> 00:05:45,080
commercial invoice says that the cost of

167
00:05:43,400 –> 00:05:47,630
your or the value of your goods rather

168
00:05:45,080 –> 00:05:50,180
is thirty two hundred dollars and I was

169
00:05:47,630 –> 00:05:52,400
like that’s not right I said in my first

170
00:05:50,180 –> 00:05:54,320
disorder sin of all the documentation I

171
00:05:52,400 –> 00:05:57,830
had and because what was on the

172
00:05:54,320 –> 00:05:59,600
commercial invoice was not correct and

173
00:05:57,830 –> 00:06:01,610
they didn’t really care about my first

174
00:05:59,600 –> 00:06:03,770
disorder or any of that stuff and so I

175
00:06:01,610 –> 00:06:06,440
was not actively fill out all the

176
00:06:03,770 –> 00:06:08,390
section for documentation so now at the

177
00:06:06,440 –> 00:06:11,810
end of the world that you do pay taxes

178
00:06:08,390 –> 00:06:13,580
on the value of your good so i ended up

179
00:06:11,810 –> 00:06:16,370
paying two hundred and twelve dollars

180
00:06:13,580 –> 00:06:17,780
somewhere in that Paul bark and I assay

181
00:06:16,370 –> 00:06:20,480
what I really should have paid was maybe

182
00:06:17,780 –> 00:06:22,850
half it up so if we say okay a hundred

183
00:06:20,480 –> 00:06:25,340
and six dollars is what I overpaid right

184
00:06:22,850 –> 00:06:27,320
so I email my supplier and I asked for a

185
00:06:25,340 –> 00:06:28,940
revised and updated commercial invoice

186
00:06:27,320 –> 00:06:31,610
and they sent it in the next day like I

187
00:06:28,940 –> 00:06:33,150
don’t think they care what they put on

188
00:06:31,610 –> 00:06:34,860
it which is wise

189
00:06:33,150 –> 00:06:36,570
the important for you to make sure that

190
00:06:34,860 –> 00:06:38,520
you’re getting the right value put on

191
00:06:36,570 –> 00:06:39,600
your commercial invoice because they

192
00:06:38,520 –> 00:06:42,060
were like oh yeah here you go whatever

193
00:06:39,600 –> 00:06:44,430
so I opened a claim with fedex and I so

194
00:06:42,060 –> 00:06:46,050
here’s an updated invoice it was not

195
00:06:44,430 –> 00:06:47,940
correct before it here’s the purchase

196
00:06:46,050 –> 00:06:50,070
order showing that this was the value of

197
00:06:47,940 –> 00:06:51,720
goods that we agreed on and fedex drove

198
00:06:50,070 –> 00:06:53,910
back in there like yeah but the original

199
00:06:51,720 –> 00:06:56,880
invoice says this if you want us to file

200
00:06:53,910 –> 00:07:01,290
a claim for you we can do it for $75 and

201
00:06:56,880 –> 00:07:02,880
done another though that sounds like no

202
00:07:01,290 –> 00:07:05,100
because think about it you’re going to

203
00:07:02,880 –> 00:07:07,050
spend 75 dollars for them to start that

204
00:07:05,100 –> 00:07:09,660
claim I don’t want to get to it on some

205
00:07:07,050 –> 00:07:11,070
kind of list with customs patrol I don’t

206
00:07:09,660 –> 00:07:13,020
know how I happen or not that I want to

207
00:07:11,070 –> 00:07:15,150
risk it I will just pay the stupid tax

208
00:07:13,020 –> 00:07:18,420
the frustration tax of one hundred and

209
00:07:15,150 –> 00:07:21,120
six dollars and move on but had I gotten

210
00:07:18,420 –> 00:07:22,890
that right amount on the initial invoice

211
00:07:21,120 –> 00:07:24,840
this would have been a discussion

212
00:07:22,890 –> 00:07:26,430
nothing in the world does something to

213
00:07:24,840 –> 00:07:28,380
be aware of make sure on that commercial

214
00:07:26,430 –> 00:07:30,120
in which you have your right dollar

215
00:07:28,380 –> 00:07:32,250
amount otherwise you’re going to be

216
00:07:30,120 –> 00:07:33,870
paying too much in taxes you’re going to

217
00:07:32,250 –> 00:07:35,670
not be able to get it corrected

218
00:07:33,870 –> 00:07:37,380
apparently and it’s just going to be

219
00:07:35,670 –> 00:07:40,110
adding so make sure it’s right the first

220
00:07:37,380 –> 00:07:41,730
time that’s my tip of the day alright

221
00:07:40,110 –> 00:07:43,530
guys that’s just a little update of

222
00:07:41,730 –> 00:07:45,120
what’s going on with me what I really

223
00:07:43,530 –> 00:07:46,740

224
00:07:45,120 –> 00:07:48,930

225
00:07:46,740 –> 00:07:50,910
comment down below tell me what’s going

How To Prioritize With A Time Management Matrix

Transcription:

I know we’ve talked about to do lists before, but this is not a to do list. It’s a matrix, totally different! Hey welcome back to another episode of The Bootstrap Boutique where beginners build businesses. I’m glad you’re here because today I’m going to share another really fun productivity tool with you guys.

And unlike the 3×5 method which is something I invented just for myself, this is an actual real thing that real people in real businesses do, so hopefully its something that will resonate with you.

Time Management Matrix

And what I’m talking about is Stephen Covey’s time management matrix. So if you’ve ever read the book the 7 habits of highly effective people, and I’ve got my one sentence book review linked down below, then this will be familiar to you. But don’t skip ahead, because its always good to have a refresher.

What is the Time Management Matrix?

The time management matrix is the way to prioritize your tasks because you’re going to have your to do list and you’re going to have items that are screaming at you to get done but they don’t really matter in the grand scheme of things.

Then you’re going to have the really big important things that you need to get done the things that are going to advance your career, build your business but because they’re not screaming at you, you just tend to put them off to the next day.

Time Management Matrix for The Bootstrap Boutique

So let’s go through what a time management matrix could look like for me running The Bootstrap Boutique.

Here’s our matrix, its just 2 boxes by 2 boxes and on the side we’re going to label box 1 important and 2 not important, 3 urgent and 4 not urgent. And you’re going to take your to do list and you’re going to decide: what is important and urgent, important and not urgent, not important but urgent and not important and not urgent.

So a to do list for The Bootstrap Boutique may look something like this: reply to comments, shoot video, transcribe video, post to blog, research videos, do out reach, do social sharing and do branding.

So lets go through the exercise and put things in the boxes so we can determine what I should be focusing on during the day and what I probably shouldn’t.

Reply To Comments

Ok, reply to comments. Now responding to comments is one of my favorite things I do because I love to interact with this community but at the end of the day, how much does it really build the business? That was not meant to be a misleading comment. I actually that responding to comments and emails and talking with you guys is one of the most important things I can do as the head bootstrapper of The Bootstrap Boutique because its how you build a community. So for me replying to comments is both important and urgent because your expectation when you comment on my video is not that 3 weeks later I’ll respond to you, it’s probably within a day, maybe 2 if its the weekend, but usually it’s within a day for sure.

Shoot Videos

Ok number 2. Shoot Video. That also, I believe, falls into the important and urgent category. Because if I don’t have videos, I don’t have a Bootstrap Boutique. There’s nothing else here. There’s not really a blog to speak of, or any other medium where I share information with you guys. This is it, so these videos have got to get done, so they also go in that first quadrant of important and urgent.

Write Transcripts

What about my number 3 item though? Write Transcripts. Did you guys know that I personally transcribe every single video that I post? There’s a couple of reasons why I do that, 1 because if someone needs closed captioning I want them to have it, 2 because Google can’t really hear what is said in videos so if you add the text of what is spoken, Google can read that and they can understand what they need to be ranking these videos for. Also, I use the transcript instead of a blog post so if you go over to https://www.thebootstrapboutique.com you’ll see that every video has a transcript underneath it so I just use it double. But it takes a lot of time to transcribe these videos. Is it something that is absolutely vital to the success of The Bootstrap Boutique? No. It’s not. For that reason it falls in not important and not urgent and it is almost always the last thing I do before a video gets put to bed.

Research Videos

The fourth item on this to do list would be to research videos which is an important task because I need to know what kind of topics people in my audience are looking for so I can create videos that are going to best help them. However, that is not something that ever feels urgent to me mainly because I have so many things I want to talk about that I already know are going to resonate with this audience, that going out and spending time just researching more ideas doesn’t feel like something I need to do right now because I have pages full of ideas already.

Influencer Outreach

Number six is doing outreach to influencers in this space and I do believe that is important for the long term growth and success of The Bootstrap Boutique, but is it urgent? Is that something I feel like “uh, I got to do that right now” no. Maybe it should be, but I’m just doing this off how I feel.

Social Sharing

Number 7 is social sharing. Say that five times fast. But I, so for me that means posting to this on Twitter or on other social places where I hang out and that is something that is really falling in that urgent category because I want it to happen as soon as I post videos to start getting it out there and spreading the message but is it really important, do those tweets drive a lot of views to these videos? They don’t. No, not at all. So it’s not important and if it’s not happening day one I have to become more Ok with that because there’s other more important things I need to be doing.

Update Blog

The fourth item on this to do list would be to update my blog. Now I do think thats an important thing to do because something could happen and  YouTube could go away and I still want to have a place where all this content and information can live. But my blog is really right now just a holding spot for those videos, its not something I drive traffic to, its not something I’m really particularly proud of at the moment, so I feel like its not as urgent. Now should I go out and really work on updating my blog then that will become more important to make it timely but right now I just don’t feel like its there so I’m more comfortable putting it in the not urgent category.

Branding

Number 8, working on my branding. I’m not an artist, I’m not a graphic designer, but I think we both know The Bootstrap Boutique branding could be spiffed up a little bit. But again, I don’t think you’re here or your not here because of my logo, I think you’re interested in building businesses, physical product businesses with Amazon most likely, so that’s just not been a focus of mine. I see people with branding that looks like it came from 2005 and they are doing just fine on the Internet. So its, it needs some attention, but again, not urgent for me. Not urgent at all.

Wrap Up

I hope you’ve enjoyed this overview of Stephen Covey’s time management matrix, if you didn’t get the graphics of what I was showing on screen, you can download a copy, I’ve got a link below in the description so go ahead and grab that and I will talk to you next time. Take care!

Vlog Like A Boss – Book Review

Transcript

Have you ever held someone’s dream in your hand? Hey welcome back for another episode of The Bootstrap Boutique where beginners build businesses. I’m glad you’re here because today I want to talk about something a little meta, which is making these videos for you every week.

The Vlog Boss

And to do that I have to tell you about one of my YouTube mentors, Amy Schmittauer. That’s her right there. I found Amy and her YouTube channel SavvySexySocial back when I was looking for how to schedule a post to YouTube, or how to schedule a video to YouTube. Because I was that green and I was that new and I didn’t know how to do it.

See back in the early days of The Bootstrap Boutique I used to shoot a video, kind of edit it, and immediately upload it and I knew that if I was going to keep doing this week after week then I was going to have to find a better way.

So I go to YouTube and I search “how to schedule a video to post on Youtube” and Amy was there with a tutorial. I went and looked up how to do something else and Amy was there with a tutorial. Every question it felt like that I had about how to do something on YouTube, Amy had a tutorial.

She was out there providing value and showing her expertise in a way that was truly helpful for what I needed so I became a fan immediately. Her videos were not only informative, they were also entertaining and that led to me binge watching them. She’s got 700 and some, I haven’t seen them all I’m sure, but I’ve watched a lot of them because I was learning something with each new video.

How To Vlog Like A Boss

One thing that I really picked up on, and I didn’t know it was a “thing” was the way she structured her videos.  Her short intro, immediately giving you all the information you need, a call to action and end it. So there’s not all this extra fluff in her videos.

Oh, and look, there it is right there on page 87, it’s Amy’s Authority Video Formula all about how to do a YouTube video. And I have borrowed from it. Heavily.

It’s why you’ll notice now in my videos I try to really just jump into the content, cut to the chase and not give a whole bunch of fluff and talk about whatever I was talking about in those early videos that probably had nothing to do with Amazon or selling on Amazon.

It’s also why I end with a much more clear call to action. Do you remember when I used to spell our my Twitter handle at the end, who’s got time for that? Nobody. But if I say “hey, leave me a comment” you can do that. That’s one thing.

It’s not, “leave me a comment, like this video, check out the checklist, here’s my twitter handle, let me spell my email address for you” I don’t know what I was thinking. So thank you Amy, because I needed that.

Amy’s videos are all about giving value and that is absolutely something that I try to emulate in my videos for you guys. So hey, here’s my crystal clear call to action. I have a link to Amy’s book in the description below. Go click that link and buy her book.

Because I’ll tell you, I actually am a member of Amy’s book squad and I got an advanced digital copy to read for a review, and I loved the book so much and I got so much out of it that I went and I bought this book myself even though I already have it in pdf. One, I like paper, but also I wanted to support Amy because she’s given me so much through her channel and it’s an awesome resource.

It’s something that is going to be dog-eared, underlined, and sticky noted all over. So here’s that call to action again. Check the link below, buy the book. You won’t regret it. And I will talk to you next time. Take care.
